Chapter 1: The Rules of Arithmetic
Nearly every idea in this course arrives as a problem you haven’t been shown how to solve. That’s on purpose. It means the most valuable thing you’ll build here isn’t arithmetic at all: it’s knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do.
So when a problem stares blankly back at you, stay calm and get your hands dirty. Reread it slowly (out loud is even better) and put it in your own words. Try tiny numbers. Draw something. Hunt for a pattern, or for structure hiding under the mess. Ask what would make the problem easy, then look for a way to get there. Work backwards from what you want. None of these is guaranteed to work; all of them beat staring. And a wrong turn is never wasted: finding out where the path isn’t is progress too.
Genuinely stuck? Leave. Take a walk. Eat a sandwich. Explain the problem to a friend, a parent, or a mildly interested cat. Your brain has a night shift, and it does some of its best work while you’re away; that’s why so many aha!s arrive in the shower. When you come back, read the problem once more: nine times out of ten, there’s a condition you haven’t used yet.
Hints exist because everyone needs one sometimes; taking one is not losing. Just give the problem an honest fight first: a hint after ten determined minutes teaches you plenty, while a solution read instead of struggling teaches you almost nothing. The struggle isn’t the price of the lesson. It is the lesson.
